Ref: FoggerAdvice

RGK have been involved in the supply of fogging machines for over 50 years and have accumulated a vast knowledge of fogging equipment and their application.

This section provides information on everything you need to know about foggers and fogging, what a fogger can be used for and how to use it.

How it Works. A fogging machine is a dispenser which uses high air pressure output to produce a very fine fog enabling the efficient application of various types of chemical solutions such as bactericides, virucides, insecticides, pesticides and odour control products as well as being a powerful humidifier for greenhouses etc.

Although fogging should not be used as a substitute to thorough cleaning regimes, these machines have become extremely important in the fight against Corona Virus Covid 19 and other viruses as they are able to disinfect both small and large areas quickly and effectively with the fine fog accessing most surfaces of the room which otherwise would be difficult to treat and do so in a fraction of the time it would take to sanitise all the same surfaces by hand..

The fog particles produced are so fine they float in the air long enough to disinfect even the upper surfaces. It is important that you use foggable chemical solutions and not just ordinary disinfectants etc as they usually have a different viscosity and will not fog properly.

The amount of chemical solution required is also reduced due to the effective distribution of the fog. It is important not to over-fog and end up wetting the surfaces being treated. At 5 microns this fogger will use about 40ml of solution per minute and the area of an average size lounge should take about 30 seconds to fog so using only 20mm of solution. The particle size is so small it evaporates quickly and dries instantly on any surface..

How to Choose a Fogger. The foggers on our website are all very similar so chooosing which fogger suits your pupose depends on a number of factors.

The most important aspect of any fogger is the minimum particle size. The lower the micron size the better, otherwise you will risk over-wetting the area your fogging and cause all sorts of problems with electrical equipment, dampness and mould etc .

The Longray 2680A produces one of the smallest particle size at 5 microns. With a range of 5 to 50 microns it is also capable of fogging large areas as well.and is ideal for offices, homes, coaches, truck cabs etc as well as much larger areas.

The best fogger for most tasks are the ones with the hose attachment. They are ideal for fogging on the move with the flexibility of being portable and able to direct the fog in any direction without having to turn the whole unit including the contents of the tank.

The hose versions also allow for fogging in tight spaces and under floor boards by placing the hose between the floor joists.

Although the foggers without a hose are portable and can be used directionally by pointing the whole unit, they are more suited for siting at a fixed point in very large areas where the type of premises were such that overwetting would not constitute a problem..

Operators have to be guided by the chemical manufacturer's instructions and although most of the foggable chemical products mentioned are non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-irritant it is best to seek the chemical manufacturer's guidance on the use of PPE.

It is important with all foggers that over wetting is avoided especially in vehicles, aircraft, offices and homes etc where there is electrical equipment which should be switched off beforehand if possible and nothing lying around that could be blown away by the powerful jet of air. The hose type are best for offices and homes as it only takes about 30-60 seconds to fog a standard office or living room..

The Chemicals. We do not supply the chemicals I'm afraid but here are 3 suppliers many of our customers have used.

https://ukecoelectrostatic.com/product/bright-water for Hypochlorous Acid Solution - Brand Name Brightwater.

http://tdbsupply.co.uk/products/sterizar-cleaning-products/sterifog.html for Quaternary Ammonium Compound Solution - Brand name Sterifog.

https://saturn-fe.com/product/hi-fog-space-and-surface-sanitising/ for Stabilised Hydrogen Peroxide - Brand name Saturniser Hi-Fog.

One of the most commonly used chemicals against bacteria and viruses is stablised hypochlorous acid (HOCI) solution which is produced from elecrolized salt water and can be fogged using very little chemical-related PPE for workers. although we would always recommend you confirm that with your chemical supplier,

It is intrinsically safe, as it is a non-irritant and the human body actually produces the same molecule for self-defense, it is the same substance your white blood cells produce to fight infection.

It is also said to be so safe to inhale it is being evaluated as a treatment for throat and lung infections. Reports form cruise liners who have been using it for some time now say that it does not cause discoloration of most carpets, furniture and textiles, killing microbes without leaving behind harmful residues. However, although hypochlorous acid solution provides a unique power to eradicate dangerous organisms, it does not have as great a residual effect like Sterifog which can still remain active for up to 30 days.

Quaternary Ammonium Compound solutions are another class of disinfectants that will take down Covid 19

Silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide is another chemical suitable for fogging against Covid 19 which is a highly effective bactericide, virucide, sporocide, fungicide, algaecide and amoebicide.

Some chemicals, usually oil based insecticides, require the fogger to have a heater and that is where the Thermal Pest Control Fogger comes in. The heating unit can be removed enabling the use of water based chemicals but doesn't fog as well as the Trijets or B & G foggers.

What foggers have been used for. Foggers have been in use for 50 years or more. In particular to control disease and insects in intensive livestock units such as poultry houses, pig houses, calf house etc using products like Formaldehyde. Nowadays this has generally been replaced by quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats or QAC's)

They were also used to innoculate livestock in intensive housing units with live (inactivated) virus vaccination products against infectious bronchitis and fowl pest (Newcastle Disease) in intensive poultry units.

More recently they have been used on cruise ships and oilrig accommodation units to control norovirus (vomiting bug) and latterly against Covid 19. Also in hospitals and medical facilities for infection control and in food factories for bacterial control.

However, with the advent of Covid 19 we received enquiries and orders for fogging a wide range of premises in every sector imaginable including many where it would not have been considered before.

They include areas where it is difficult to keep people safe from the spread of any virus without regular ariel disinfection such as hospitals, nursing homes, surgeries, gymnasiums, leisure premises, cinemas, theatres, churches, hotels, guest houses, holiday homes, restaurants, cafes, pubs, offices, shops, factories, schools, coaches, trains, aircraft, taxis, ambulances and vehicle cabs to name but a few.
